Citizen-Soldiers from the Idaho National Guard assisted employees from the Idaho Foodbank and volunteers from Idaho’s Dairy West at the Boise Centre to build food boxes for Idaho students in need on April 8, 2020. Normally these students would receive a special package of food every Friday as part of Idaho Foodbank’s Backpack Program, a service during the school year that provides nutritious food over the weekend to hungry students. Due to school closures, the Idaho Foodbank has not only adapted the program but supersized it. The boxes now contain 10 breakfast meals, lunches, dinners and snacks. Their goal today was to build 1,300 food boxes for local Treasure Valley students. The call for the Idaho National Guard came through the Idaho Office of Emergency Management from the Idaho Foodbank to help with a shortage of support during the hardship of COVID-19.
