Tech. Sgt. Matthew Plaas, a cable and antenna systems Airman, feeds fiber optic cable as it's pulled through underground tunnels March 12, 2020 at McGhee Tyson Air National Guard Base. Recently, members of the 241st Engineering Installation Squadron, a geographically separated unit of the 134th Air Refueling Wing, began work on a massive project to install new fiber optic cables to the 134th ARW. The project, taking over a month to complete, includes the heavy, dirty work of installing cable and the fine, delicate work of fusing the individual glass fibers to connect them to each building. The cable and antenna systems Airmen of the 241st EIS are trained to complete each stage of the job from start to completion, often performing their duties under austere conditions to establish communications in new locations.
