Capt. Nicholas Yager, left, a project engineer with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Sacramento District, briefs Col. James Handura, the Sacramento District commander, on the progress of renovation at the Porterville Developmental Center in Porterville, California, April 14, 2020. The Corps is renovating six unoccupied buildings at the installation to serve as an Alternate Care Facility to assist the state in a response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Once complete, the buildings will be returned to the state to fulfill staffing and logistical requirements before patients can be admitted. USACE is supporting the state of California under a FEMA mission assignment to provide planning and site assessments on potential locations, and overseeing planning and construction at the Porterville site, to help increase hospital space throughout California.
