Soldiers assigned to 1st Special Troops Battalion, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, familiarize themselves with practice fire shelters during wildland fire suppression training led by the National Interagency Fire Center, June 30, 2012. A fire shelter protects firefighters from extreme heat, providing a means to safely shield themselves from a rapidly approaching fire. Soldiers conducted two days of introductory-level instruction led by firefighting professionals from U.S. Forest Service and NIFC, the nation's support center for wildland firefighting. During the classroom setting, soldiers learned basic, essential skills needed to safely fight and suppress fire, and put those skills to use during field training, where they received hands-on training.
