SOUTH CHINA SEA (April 21, 2020) Sgt. Ramon Santiago, a joint terminal attack controller (JTAC) with Charlie Company, Battalion Landing Team, 1st Battalion, 5th Marines, 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU), and native of Yorktown, Virginia, coordinates fires with F-35B Lightning II fighter aircraft during a Tactical Air Control Party exercise aboard amphibious assault ship USS America (LHA 6). JTACs provide a critical battlespace shaping capability to the MEU by communicating directly with air support assets to call for fire in support of maneuver elements. America, flagship of the America ESG, 31st MEU team, is operating in the U.S. 7th Fleet in the U.S. 7th Fleet area of operations to enhance interoperability with allies and partners and serve as a ready response force to defend peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region.
