Operation Eagle Claw was an attempted rescue mission to free 53 diplomats held captive at the U.S. Embassy in Tehran, Iran, April 24, 1980. On, April 25, 1980, the joint mission attempt ended when five Air Commandos and three Marines lost their lives in an aircraft accident. McMillan II, all from the 8th Special Operations Squadron, as well as Marine Sgt. John D. Harvey, Cpl. George N. Holmes Jr. and Staff Sgt. Dewey L. Johnson.
