U.S. Army Capt. Believed to be Roy Wellburn, assigned to 2nd Platoon, Company A, 692nd Tank Destroyer Regiment, views the dead on one of the dozens of rail cars outside the Dachau concentration camp following its liberation April 29, 1945. Wellburn, operating his unit in support of the 2nd Battalion, 222nd Infantry Regiment, part of the 42nd Infantry Division, was among the first American forces to reach the camp during its liberation. The “death train” held the dead of those transferred to Dachau prior to the camp surrender. American Soldiers of the U.S. 7th Army, including the 42nd Infantry and 45th Infantry and 20th Armored Divisions participated in the camp’s liberation.
