Commander, Task Group 73.1, U.S. Navy Capt. Dave Welch, center, talks with Philippine Navy Lt. Cmdr. Erwin Calimag aboard the guided-missile frigate USS Vandegrift (FFG 48) during a live fire gunnery drill. The drill also included the national security cutter USCGC Waesche (WMSL 751), three Philippine Navy ships and a Philippine Coast Guard cutter. The drill is part of exercise Cooperation Afloat Readiness and Training Philippines 2012. CARAT is a series of bilateral military exercises between the U.S. Navy and the armed forces of Bangladesh, Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand.
