PACIFIC OCEAN (February 2020) Assistant Secretary of the Navy for Research, Development and Aquisition James F. Geurts looks through a periscope while aboard the Ohio-class, ballistic missile submarine USS Maine (SSBN 741) during Demonstration and Shakedown Operation 30. Demonstration and Shakedown Operations give the U.S. Navy an opportunity to conduct scheduled missile test flights of unarmed, life-extended Trident II (D5LE) missiles to evaluate and demonstrate the readiness of an SSBN's strategic weapon system and crew before operational deployment, following a submarine's engineered refueling overhaul.
