New York Army National Guard UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter crews conduct water bucket training at Round Lake, Wednesday May 13, 2020.
The collapsible buckets, known by the trademarked name Bambi Bucket, can carry 560 gallons of water. A full bucket full of water weights over two tons. UH-60 pilots, crews and maintenance personnel need to practice using the Bambi Bucket each spring in order to remain ready to operate safely during emergency situations.
4 independant crews took turns practicing throughout the day, utilizing the Round Lake Airport (which is off Route 67 on Airfield Road and privately owned, but open to the public) to practice attaching and detaching the waterbuckets on the ground before practicing filling and unloading over Round Lake.
The New York Army National Guard employs helicopter firefighting equipment when local agencies request support through the New York State Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Services.
In July of 2018, two New York Army National Guard UH-60 helicopters, equipped with Bambi Buckets, were called to a forest fire in Flat Rock State Forest in Altona, N.Y. where the aircrews dropped 126,000 gallons of water on the 526-acre fire over a 3 day period.
