200514-N-PH222-2225 LOS ANGELES (May 14, 2020) From left, Capt. John Rotruck, commanding officer of Medical Treatment Facility USNS Mercy; Capt. Daniel Cobian, mission commander, Task Force 130.1, commodore of Destroyer Squadron 21; Deputy Executive Director, Chief of Public Safety and Emergency Management, and Chief of Los Angeles Port Police, Thomas Gazsi; Capt. Jonathan Olmsted, Ship’s Master, USNS Mercy; and Executive Director of Port of Los Angeles and Chief Logistics Officer of the City of Los Angeles, Eugene D. Seroka, pose for a photo on the brow aboard hospital ship USNS Mercy (T-AH 19). Mercy deployed in support of the nation's COVID-19 response efforts, and serves as a referral hospital for non-COVID-19 patients currently admitted to shore-based hospitals. This allows shore-based hospitals to focus their efforts on COVID-19 cases. One of the Department of Defense's missions is Defense Support of Civil Authorities. DoD is supporting the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the lead federal agency, as well as state, local and public health authorities in helping protect the health and safety of the American people.
