Woodstock, Ga., native, Lance Cpl. Jeffrey Cole (right) a former machine gunner with 2nd Battalion, 9th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, stands at attention before being presented the nation’s third highest award for valor, the Silver Star. Cole received the award for his actions August 17, 2010, when his patrol in Marjah, Afghanistan came under heavy enemy fire. Despite being shot three times, Cole exposed himself to enemy fire to ensure his fellow Marines could reach safety. After being shot another three times and wounded, he continued to provide accurate suppressive fire.
