Lt. Col. Townley R. Hedrick, deputy commander, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division, hands letters over to Kenneth Cannon, uncle of Sgt. Steve Flaherty, during a ceremony in Columbia, S.C., July 14. The ceremony was held to transfer letters written by Flaherty in Vietnam to family members. Flaherty was killed in action, March 25, 1969, while on combat operations with the 101st Airborne Division, in the A Shau-A Luoi Valley, Vietnam. The letters he was carrying were taken by the Vietnamese after his death and returned to Secretary Leon Panetta by Vietnamese Defense Minister Phung Quang Thanh in Hanoi, Vietnam, June 4.
