U.S. Marine Corps First Sgt. David O Gonzalez, company first sergeant, Headquarters & Service Company, Headquarters and Support Battalion, Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, poses for a photo after discussing what Independence Day means to him on Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, California June 30, 2020. “My second deployment to Iraq... we were there May to December time frame. So, I spent my 4th of July in Iraq doing patrols. It was memorable because I got to spend it with Marines, doing things that Marines do. It was rough, but I remember the 4th of July. I didn't know it was the 4th of July until my platoon commander told me... I was one of the squad leaders and my platoon commander comes to me and says, 'Hey! Did you know that it's the 4th of July?' I said, 'No sir...oh well, let's get around and tell the Marines happy 4th of July!' Everyone got motivated because you got to remember it all together. I ended up getting one of my Marines on the radio to say, 'Hey, everyone! Happy 4th of July!' It was good, it felt good, and I felt motivated. I was away from my family but I was with my other family. A lot of times I see it as my adoptive family, and I would do anything for them to be healthy and to succeed in life.” (U.S. Marine Corps photo by Lance Cpl. Kerstin Roberts)
