U.S. Marine Cpl. Michael Campbell, an intelligence analyst with Ground Combat Element, Marine Rotational Force – Darwin, remotely operates the small unmanned aerial surveillance drone Raven RQ-11B as part of force-on-force training in Mount Bundey Training Area, Northern Territory, Australia, July 20, 2020. Campbell, a native of Owasso, Okla., is a certified group one UAS operator.
“You can use the Raven for route reconnaissance, convoy security, calls for fire, or close air support like we’re doing with the ADF today. The Raven acquires a target, and I pass up a grid, description, and elevation of that target to our Australian air assets. The tigers use me as a talk-on to ensure they’ve got eyes on the right target.”
During this training, the GCE deployed SUAS in support of notional combat operations, providing real time surveillance from a bird’s eye view. (U.S. Marine Corps photo by Cpl. Harrison Rakhshani)
