U.S. Marine Pfc. Preston Taylor, mortarman with Ground Combat Element, Marine Rotational Force – Darwin, stands following force-on-force training in Mount Bundey Training Area, Northern Territory, Australia, July 21, 2020. Taylor is a native of Raleigh, N.C.
“I’ll be promoting to Lance Corporal in a few weeks. I know it sounds corny, but it’s been a long journey. At ITB, I was the honor grad for mortars; they saw I was fast on the gun. You’ve got to work hard to stand out. Same rule applies in the fleet. It’s rare that they have new boots as an A-gunner. It took hard work to get here.”
This training involved various components of the GCE, including mortars, artillery, and combined anti-armor teams. (U.S. Marine Corps photo by Cpl. Harrison Rakhshani)
