SAN DIEGO (July 8, 2020) Retired Air Force Col. Mark Bowyer, Walter Reed National Military Medical Center and Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences’ surgical simulation director, explains the use of a simulated, surgery mannequin to Capt. Bradford Smith, Naval Medical Center San Diego’s (NMCSD) commanding officer, during an Advanced Surgical Skills for Exposure in Trauma (ASSET+) training evolution in the hospital’s Simulation Center July 8. ASSET+ training replaces the existing Emergency War Surgery Course (EWSC), and will be a required part of the knowledge skills and abilities for expeditionary surgeons. NMCSD's mission is to prepare service members to deploy in support of operational forces, deliver high quality healthcare services and shape the future of military medicine through education, training and research. NMCSD employs more than 6,000 active duty military personnel, civilians, and contractors in the Southern California to provide patients with world-class care anytime, anywhere.
