The Marine Corps recruited young Navajos in 1942 to serve in the Pacific during World War II so they could utilize their native language. They would use this as a code that would be difficult to crack by the enemy. President Ronald Reagan honored the Navajos by declaring August 14th as "National Navajo Code Talker Day."
