Bethlehem, Pa., native Master Sgt. James Alesick,l eft, an operations sergeant for the 1st Battalion, 82nd Field Artillery Regiment, serving as a competition evaluator, follows in his truck behind an M109A6 Paladin howitzer as it rolls down a road on Camp Taji, Iraq, Oct. 8 during the "Top Gun" competition. Alesick and his co-evaluator Sgt. 1st Class Jamie Crankfield, a 1-82 battalion master gunner who hails from Colquitt, Ga., trailed the Paladin to see if its crew could drive to and find the checkpoints that they had plotted manually on a map.
