Carla and Jim Hogan, parents of Lance Cpl. Donald J. Hogan, stand for The Marines' Hymn during their son’s re-dedication ceremony on Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, California, Aug. 28, 2020. 1st Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment’s Bachelor Enlisted Quarters was named to honor Lance Cpl. Hogan and his extraordinary heroism in action while serving as a rifleman with 2nd Platoon, Company A, 1st Battalion, 5th Marines, Regimental Combat Team 7, Marine Expeditionary Brigade-Afghanistan, on Aug. 26, 2009, in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. Hogan was posthumously awarded the Navy Cross for his extreme act of selflessness, which in turn, saved a Marine's life and allowed his squad to evade the brunt of an Improvised Explosive Device.
