The California Army National Guard’s 1st Lt. Daniel Torres and Pfc. Robert Merced of the Redding-based Joint Task Force Rattlesnake, cut a fire line by uprooting stems and digging dirt Sept. 1, 2020, during the CZU Lightning Complex Fire in Santa Cruz and San Mateo counties, California. Cal Guard’s Rattlesnake teams are assisting the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) to contain the massive wildfire that scorched more than 85,000 acres since igniting on Aug. 16.
