U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Jeffrey Spanos, 86th Civil Engineer Squadron training non-commissioned officer in charge, jots down his observations following 86th CES firefighters response to a simulated aircraft crash site during Operation Varsity 2020-03 at Ramstein Air Base, Germany, Sept. 1, 2020. After the aircraft fire has been extinguished and search and rescue has been carried out, firefighters will then engage in salvage and overhaul. The purpose of salvage and overhaul is to uncover any possible hidden flames or embers that could pose as a threat to other response teams such as investigators.
