Maj. Gen. John E. Shaw, U.S. Space Force’s Space Operations Command commander, speaks during the United States Space Force Induction Ceremony, Sept. 1, 2020, at Vandenberg AFB, Calif. This ceremony marked yet another significant milestone in the development of the USSF, since it was created on Dec. 20, 2019, officially commissioning and enlisting the newest members of the Space Force. As the newest branch of U.S. military service, the USSF aims to maintain the upper hand of space, while also adapting to new challenges that brings. Upon the creation of the USSF, many Air Force personnel in space-related career fields were offered the opportunity to transfer into the Space Force, becoming some of the first Space Force service members.
