Churchill (DDG 81), renders a salute as the Mark 45 5-inch gun fires a 21-gun salute during a remembrance ceremony in the Gulf of Aden to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the Oct. 12, 2000 attack on the guided-missile destroyer USS Cole (DDG 67), Oct. 12. Winston S. Churchill is deployed to the U.S. 5th Fleet area of operations in support of naval operations to ensure maritime stability and security in the Central Region, connecting the Mediterranean and Pacific through the Western Indian Ocean and three critical chokepoints to the free flow of global commerce.
