Staff. Sgt. Jordan Simmons, 436th Security Forces Squadron response force leader, was awarded the Purple Heart at Dover Air Force Base, Delaware, Oct. 16, 2020. On Dec. 11, 2019, Simmons was struck by shrapnel from a vehicle-borne improvised explosive device attack at Bagram Airfield, Afghanistan. The Purple Heart is the oldest American military decoration, awarded to members of the U.S. armed forces who have been killed or wounded in action against an enemy.
