U.S. Army Sergeant Sherman Cheung, and Specialist Erika Gonzalez, both from 42nd Infantry Division, New York Army National Guard, stand by a T-wall they painted to commemorate the 42nd ID’s deployment to the ARCENT area of responsibility, Nov. 10, 2020. Texas barriers or T-walls have been used by the military to protect structures and personnel from rocket and mortar attacks, making them an important protective feature on U.S. military bases around the world. T-walls have become canvases, used by countless units to paint helicopter gunships, gladiators, wolves, etc., alongside the names of the units that painted them. Some see T-walls as living monuments to the service members who served and fought there. (U.S. Army photo by Staff Sgt. Mark Scovell)
