Staff Sgt. Sean Sunday, 2nd Platoon, Company C, 2nd Reconnaissance Battalion, 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit team leader prepares a paddle as a gift for the instructors at Tier 1 Group in Crawfordsville, Ark., Aug. 8, 2012. The platoon conducted training at T1G as a part of the 26th MEU's predeployment training program. The history of the recon paddle dates back to the days of the Marine Raiders, where every raider was issued a boat paddle. At the end of his tour, his team mates would steal it, and decorate it. The more time that was spent on the paddle, and more elaborate the decor, meant that he was valued in the unit. The reconnaissance paddle gifts of today reflect their history and appreciation of their heritage. (U.S. Marine Corps photo by Cpl. Christopher Q. Stone/Released)
