Benjamin Spencer, dean of the William & Mary Law School and a U.S. Army Reserve captain, watches his youngest son attend virtual kindergarten from their home in Williamsburg, Virginia, Dec. 3, 2020. Spencer and his wife, Marlette, have nine children, which caused major challenges as the way of doing things — including school — changed in the midst of a worldwide pandemic. Spencer is the first African-American dean hired by the oldest law school in the country and a U.S. Army Reserve officer and lawyer who works for the Government Appellate Division.
