U.S. Marine Lance Cpl. Zakary Vanderkooi, a special signals communications operator with 3rd Radio Battalion, 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU), and Twentynine Palms, California native, applies face paint during a motorized raid on Okinawa, Japan, Dec. 18, 2020. The 31st MEU utilized Light Armored Reconnaissance (LAR) to conduct a motorized raid during MEU Exercise in order to rehearse nontraditional ways of employing standard assets. The 31st MEU, the Marine Corps’ only continuously forward-deployed MEU, provides a flexible and lethal force ready to perform a wide range of military operations as the premier crisis response force in the Indo-Pacific region.
