CAMP LEMONNIER, Djibouti – U.S. Navy Religious Program Specialist 1st Class Barry Menges of Auburn, Indiana, positions candles for a Blue Christmas service held on Camp Lemonnier, Dec. 21, 2020. Blue Christmas, also known as the Longest Night, falls on the Winter Solstice. A western Christian tradition, it is designed for those who may have difficulty during the holidays due to mourning a loss, life change or other emotional struggle.
The candles represent those who have passed, the pain of mourning, honor of self and the gift of hope and faith. Menges assists with religious services for all faiths and supports the Chaplains at Camp Lemonnier. Camp Lemonnier is an operational installation that enables U.S., allied and partner nation forces to be where and when they are needed to ensure security in Europe, Africa and Southwest Asia.
