Former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Adm. William J. Crowe Jr., talks with Midshipmen at a reception honoring the U.S. Naval Academy Alumni Association Distinguished Graduate Award recipients, Sept. 21, 2001. Crowe's career began in the diesel submarine community after graduating from the Naval Academy in 1947, and after retiring from active Naval service in 1989 he went on to serve as U.S. Ambassador to the United Kingdom from 1994-1997. Crowe passed away Oct. 18 at National Naval Medical Center, Bethesda, Md., and will be laid to rest in the Naval Academy Cemetery, Oct. 31, with full military honors.
