Cpl. Salvador Alvarez Jr. explains methods of detecting improvised explosive devices to Marines during Exercise Khaan Quest 2012 at the Mongolian Armed Forces Peace Support Operations Training Center at the Five Hills Training Area near Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, Aug. 16. The Marines learned new techniques being used to make IEDs and then were required to find them in the environment. Khaan Quest is a regularly scheduled, multinational exercise sponsored by U.S. Army Pacific (USARPAC) and hosted annually by the Mongolian Armed Forces. Khaan Quest 12 is the latest in a continuing series of exercises designed to promote regional peace and security. Alvarez is a field artillery cannoneer with India Battery, 3rd Battalion, 11th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, and the Marines are with 1st Platoon, Company E, 2nd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division, III MEF.
