SAN DIEGO (Jan. 6, 2021) Lt. Cmdr. Scott Donoughe, a neurology resident (left), and Cmdr. Shawn Belverud, a neurosurgeon (right), both assigned to Naval Medical Center San Diego (NMCSD), suture a patient after performing a herniated disk repair procedure utilizing a 3D surgical microscope Dec. 6. The new 3D surgical microscope can be used in a traditional, superficial manner, exoscopically and endoscopically. 3D glasses and 4K monitors allows those not physically beside the operating table to see a stereoscopic view during a procedure. This was the first procedure at NMCSD that used a 3D surgical microscope. NMCSD’s mission is to prepare service members to deploy in support of operational forces, deliver high quality healthcare services and shape the future of military medicine through education, training and research. NMCSD employs more than 6,000 active duty military personnel, civilians, and contractors in Southern California to provide patients with world-class care anytime, anywhere.
