Troopers assigned to 2nd Battalion, 8th Cavalry Regiment stand at attention and observe a moment of silence Jan. 13, 2021, as they participate in Lithuania’s Freedom Defender’s Day. On this day 30 years ago, hundreds of unarmed Lithuanian civilians assembled as a human shield around the parliament building and a national broadcast tower as Soviet soldiers attempted to reinstate the Soviet Constitution. Though 14 civilians lost their lives and more than 500 more were injured, Lithuania remained an independent country.
