Valentine’s Day came early for NMCCL staff members this week as they were visited by students and staff from DoDEA Bitz Intermediate School. Two students, along with their parents and several teachers, delivered handmade ‘thank you’ cards for NMCCL health care workers.

“The cards are to say thanks to all the people who gave their time and respect to the people who are hurt or sick,” stated Benjamin MacLean, a fourth-grader at Bitz.

NMCCL Commander and Director Captain Reginald Ewing, Command Master Chief Morais McDermott, and several health care workers from the Acute Respiratory Clinic and Intensive Care Unit were present to receive the 200 heart-shaped cards.

Benjamin was joined by fellow student, 2nd-grader Denver Kauffman, and several teachers to hand deliver the cards. According to their teacher, the students were very excited to make the cards for NMCCL.

“Our 100th day of school is this week and we wanted to make it about giving back to our community, so we are doing ‘Gators Give Back’ and you guys have done so much and we just wanted to say thank you,” said Olivia Kuntz, who teaches 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade.

Kuntz explained that many of the students have personally witnessed the effects of the COVID pandemic through family and friends. “The cards are so heartfelt because all of our kids have been touched by health care workers in our community,” said Kuntz. “As you read through the cards you’ll notice that some of the students even shard their personal experiences, ‘thank you for helping my dad, thank you for helping me when I hurt my arm.’ The cards are so heartfelt, and the kids really enjoyed making them.”

The cards will be distributed to different departments at the Medical Center and displayed on the Quarterdeck for staff and beneficiaries to enjoy. NMCCL appreciates the visit and we value our relationship with members of the community.
