A contractor aboard Afloat Forward Staging Base (Interim) USS Ponce (AFSB(I) 15) sets up prior to a Scan Eagle unmanned aerial vehicle launch. Scan Eagle is a runway independent, long-endurance, unmanned aerial vehicle system designed to provide multiple surveillance, reconnaissance data, and battlefield damage assessment missions. Ponce, formerly designated as an amphibious transport dock (LPD) ship, was converted and reclassified as an AFSB (I) in April to fulfill a long-standing U.S. Central Command request for an AFSB to be located in its area of responsibility.
