U.S. Marine Corps 1st Lt. Mikayla Cox, intelligence officer, G-2, 3rd Marine Expeditionary Brigade, poses for a photo on Camp Courtney, Okinawa, Japan, Mar. 3, 2021. “I moved to China when I was 8 years old,” said Cox. “When I came back to the states years later and fluent in Mandarin, I learned about the U.S. Marine Corps. We lived in South Carolina; an hour and a half away from Parris Island. My school would go there every other year on a field trip. That’s where I learned I wanted to be a Marine. I am extremely proud of the progress women have made throughout the years. There are very few black female officers in the Marine Corps. It’s an honor to be one of them.” (U.S. Marine Corps photo by Cpl. Nickolas Beamish)
