U.S. Marine Corps Staff Sgt. Spendia T. Herrera, a distribution management chief with 3rd Marine Expeditionary Brigade, poses for a photo on Camp Courtney, Okinawa, Japan, Mar. 5, 2021. “Joining the Marine Corps was the best decision I ever made in my life,” said Herrera. “In boot camp, even though I was dropped from November Company to Papa Company, I graduated as Molly Marine [a recruit who is chosen by her peers for exemplifying core values] and was accepted into the Women Marines Association. I’ve been in the Marine Corps for 11 years now, and everything I do, I do for my son. He is my inspiration. Everybody calls me this little princess and girly girl. Well this girly girl can still hook and jab. You know when you wake up in the morning and look in the mirror you see that you’re not an average female. You’re one who can hold an M4 or M16, shoot a pistol and do anything you put your mind too. You’re going above and beyond, and you need to be proud of that. I see females come into the Marine Corps who are so smart and intuitive, and I see the change that they are making. Opha May Johnson is turning in her grave seeing this, and it’s such an honor and a blessing to be a part of it.” (U.S. Marine Corps photo by Cpl. Francesca Landis)
