210322-M-JO645-1280 ARABIAN GULF (March 22, 2021) – U.S. Marine Corps Gunnery Sgt. Logan Thompson, an aircraft avionics technician assigned to Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron 164 (Reinforced), 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU), embarked aboard the amphibious transport dock ship USS San Diego (LPD 22), mans a M2A1 machine gun on the rear ramp of a CH-53E Super Stallion during a routine transit patrol in support of the International Maritime Security Construct (IMSC) in the Arabian Gulf, March 22. The IMSC maintains the freedom of navigation, international law and free flow of commerce to support regional stability and security of the maritime commons. San Diego, part of the Makin Island Amphibious Ready Group, and the 15th MEU are deployed to the U.S. 5th Fleet area of operations in support of naval operations to ensure maritime stability and security in the Central Region, connecting the Mediterranean and the Pacific through the western Indian Ocean and three strategic choke points.
