First Lt. Jerome Stokes, from the 887th Engineer Battalion, out of Augusta, Ga., works with his soldier at the urban search-and-rescue rubble pile, Aug. 31, in Raleigh, N.C. The course the soldiers worked on is a 10,000 square-foot rubble pile used by civilian search-and-rescue teams. The Georgia National Guardsmen are part of a search-and-rescue unit and were working side by side with civilian firefighters from Raleigh, Fayetteville and Cary, N.C., as a part of Vigilant Guard training exercise.
