The Commanding General of First Army, Lt. Gen. Thomas S. James Jr., First Army Deputy Commanding General for Operations, Maj. Gen. Troy D. Galloway, and Command Sergeant Major of First Army, Command Sgt. Maj. John P. McDwyer, honor the gravesite of General John J. Pershing, General of the Armies of the United States during World War I, at Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Virginia, March 29, 2021. Laid to rest in Section 34 of Arlington National Cemetery, chosen by him to be surrounded by his Soldiers, General Pershing became the first commanding general of First Army, the first of three field armies organized during World War I.
