Street view of the Captain James Lawrence House located in Burlington, N.J., March 11, 2021. Lawrence was born in the right side of the duplex, the left portion of the building being the birthplace of James Fenimore Cooper. Lawrence served as a Navy captain during the War of 1812 where he commanded the USS Hornet and later, the USS Chesapeake. During a battle against the HMS Shannon on June 1, 1813, Lawrence was wounded. He is remembered for his dying phrase “Don’t give up the ship.” The Chesapeake was captured by the British and Lawrence died three days later. He was buried with military honors in Nova Scotia, but was reinterred at Trinity Church Cemetery in New York City. The Navy has named five ships in his honor. The duplex is part of the Burlington County Historical Society. (New Jersey Department of Military and Veterans Affairs phot by Mark C. Olsen)
