Sgt. 1st Class Efrain Gutierrez, currently assigned to 3-364 Brigade Engineer Battalion, provided care for a Soldier who showed signs and symptoms of a heat injury during a training event.
Upon his arrival, SFC Gutierrez saw the Soldier was vomiting and displayed signs of heat exhaustion that were quickly worsening. SFC Gutierrez immediately ran for his equipment and enlisted the assistance of those around him. He promptly applied ice sheets to the Soldier and remained with him until the unit medics assumed control of the situation. SFC Gutierrez’s attention to detail and mental agility potentially saved the life of the Soldier. His continued professionalism during operations is indicative of the standard for a First Army OC/T.
