210408-N-ME396-1005 GROTON, Conn. (April 8, 2021) David Lewis, general manager of the Naval Submarine Base (SUBASE) New London Navy Exchange (NEX), speaks to employees and patrons at a cake cutting event to celebrate the 75th birthday of the Navy Exchange Service Command (NEXCOM). With origins going back to canteens operated aboard Navy ships, the modern day NEX stores and system are the result of the recommendations from a 1945 service committee formed to study Navy resale activities. Led by Capt. Wheelock H. Bingham, a Supply Corps Officer in the Naval Reserves, the committee recommended that all resale activities be operated like a large chain of retail stores and that a central office be established to oversee their operation.
