Retired Indiana National Guard Col. Kirk White receives the Legion of Merit Medal from Maj. Gen. Tim Thombleson, 38th Infantry Division commanding general, during a ceremony at the Cyclone Division Armory in Indianapolis, Sunday, April 11, 2021. "Kirk is not only one of my favorite soldiers, but also one of my favorite human beings," said Thombleson during the ceremony. White, who retired in August, served more than 30 years in the military. The Cyclone soldiers served twice together overseas: in Afghanistan in 2009 in support of Operation Enduring Freedom and in Jordan in 2019 in support of Operation Spartan Shield. White, who is the assistant vice president of strategic partnerships at Indiana University, said receiving the medal is a reflection of my team, my soldiers and my family. The citation for the award read "Col. Kirk White served with honor and distinction. His intelligence and talents were instrumental in the many successful missions executed by the organizations he served. His dedicated leadership ensured the development of leaders through all echelons within the Indiana Army National Guard, setting a bright tone for the future of the organization."
