U.S. Air Force Senior Airman Michael Garvin, an Orwell, N.Y. native and fire fighter with the 628th Civil Engineer Squadron, 628th Air Base Wing stationed at Joint Base Charleston, SC., prepares a COVID-19 vaccine at the state-led, federally-supported Ford Field Community Vaccination Center in Detroit, Mich., April 20, 2021. Garvin is part of a group of Airmen assigned to 1st Detachment, 64th Air Expeditionary Group that are assisting with the vaccination efforts. Garvin's main responsibility is supporting the local community members by ensuring vaccinations are drawn according to proper guidelines. COVID-19 has affected Garvin’s family, “My parents and grandpa got it, but they handled it well, didn’t have to go to the hospital or anything.” Garvin is ready to provide a helping hand to the community of Detroit, saying, “I love to help everyone here, it’s great to help our country directly.” U.S. Northern Command, through U.S. Army North, remains committed to providing continued, flexible Department of Defense support to the Federal Emergency Management Agency as part of the whole-of-government response to COVID-19.
