    Federal Vaccine Response

U.S. Air Force Airman 1st Class Thang Nguyen, a San Jose, California native and finance specialist with 377th Comptroller Squadron stationed at Kirtland Air Force Base, New Mexico, poses during a break at the state-led, federally-supported Community Vaccination Center (CVC) at the former Roosevelt High School in Gary, Indiana, May 4, 2021. Nguyen is part of a group of Air Force personnel assigned to the 2nd Detachment, 64th Air Expeditionary Group that are supporting vaccination efforts. His main responsibility includes running vaccines to the vaccination stations, checking in community members to receive their vaccinations, and screening community members to make sure they are ready for their vaccination. Nguyen is also in charge of morale events for his team. He plans trips for his team to boost morale and to get closer to his team. “If someone is on the fence about getting the vaccine, I would tell them to just go for it,” he said. “A lot of people have passed away and if you have a chance to keep more from dying, why won’t you?” To Nguyen, helping the community means a lot to him. As an Asian American, he recognizes his family’s struggle to give him a better life, and being a part of the U.S. Air Force is his way of giving back. “Asian American heritage month means a lot to me since it recognizes the contributions of Asian Americans,” he said. “My parents are the most important thing to me and they played a big part in me joining the military and giving back to the country because I want to do something for them and be able to support them.” U.S. Northern Command, through U.S. Army North, remains committed to providing continued, flexible Department of Defense support to the Federal Emergency Management Agency as part of the whole-of-government response to COVID-19.
