CAMP LEMONNIER, Djibouti (May 4, 2021) U.S. Navy Senior Chief Construction Mechanic Thomas Halleck, from Jacksonville, Fla., speaks to the audience during a dedication memorial service held at Camp Lemonnier, Djibouti (CLDJ), on May 4, 2021. Sailors with Naval Mobile Construction Battalion (NMCB) 14, currently station at CLDJ, held a ceremony at the refurbished Old Cantina they completed in honor of seven Seabees killed in action in Iraq from April 30, 2004, to May 2, 2004. Halleck was attached to NMBC 14 at the time and is a survivor of multiple attacks that claimed the lives of his fellow Seabees.
Seabee is a nickname that comes from the first letters "C and B" from the words Construction Battalion. The Seabee “Can Do,” spirit symbolizes the Naval Construction Force Sailors' positive attitude to succeed in any task presented and the commitment to make a difference to the mission. The NMCB is designed to provide construction and military support operations for U.S. and allied military activities and engineering support for Fleet Marine Units.
