Battle of Short Hills Monument at Scotch Plains, N.J., May 26, 2021. The battle was a result of British Lt. Gen. William Howe’s attempt to lure Gen. George Washington’s Continental Army out of its defensive positions in the Watchung Mountains during the Revolutionary War in June 1777. On June 26, 1777, Howe’s British and Hessian forces attacked Brig. Gen. William Alexander’s ("Lord Stirling") Continental Army forces resulting in a running battle. Howe’s attack alerted Washington who withdrew his forces back to the Watchungs. The battle marked Howe’s last attempt to lure the Continental Army out of the Watchung Mountains.
