List of names on the west side of the Camp Merritt Memorial Monument at Cresskill, N.J., May 6, 2021. The 66-foot tall obelisk, which marked the Camp’s center, is dedicated to the Soldiers who embarked through the Camp to fight in Europe during World War I. Inscribed on the Monument’s east and west sides are the names of the 573 Soldiers, four nurses and one civilian who died at the camp due to the 1918 influenza epidemic. On the north side is a relief sculpted by Robert I. Aitken of a World War I doughboy. Directly in front is a dimensional stone carving map of Camp Merritt. The Monument was dedicated on May 30, 1924. Gen. John J. Pershing, Commander of the American Expeditionary Forces during World War I, gave the dedication address. (New Jersey Department of Military and Veterans Affairs photo by Mark C. Olsen)
